Neutron Generation System for Radiation Therapy

The goal of this project is to develop a neutron generation system for radiation therapy. This system possesses a neutron source attached to a 6-axis robot manipulator, allowing for its operation. As a result, customized modulators and shielding become possible.

  • 6-Axis Robot Manipulator
    Utilizing a robot arm, it precisely operates the neutron source, customized modulators, and shielding.

    The first prototype neutron generator is designed compactly, known as the ‘Curly’ based on Adelphi DD-110.4M, and is attached to a KUKA robot arm. Moreover, to achieve size and weight reduction, the neutron generator uses a compact modulator. This ensures that the desired neutron spectrum and dose can be delivered to the patient.
  • Modulator Attachment
    The modulator and modulator attachment (MA) to the neutron generator or its head are designed to deliver the desired neutron spectrum and dose to the patient according to the cancer site being treated. It’s anticipated that the MA and modulator can be easily altered to customize the shape and spectrum of the neutron beam for treatment. Research and consideration will be given to optimal neutron beams for various cancer sites, and modulators and MAs will be evaluated based on proposals from Adelphi and ORNATE.

With the development of this system, a more flexible and effective approach becomes possible in cancer treatment. Through the customization of the neutron beam’s shape and spectral therapy, it will likely enable the provision of optimized treatments tailored to each patient’s specific cancer site.
